A 3D printed clay stamp lets you add text, logos, or patterns to pottery, polymer clay jewelry, air-dry clay ornaments, and ceramic tiles — repeatedly, consistently, with no carving required. The stamp STL file is free to generate in Stamp3D's 3D stamp maker and takes minutes to design. The print itself costs a few cents in filament.

Clay stamps work differently from rubber stamps in one key way: you don't need to mirror the design. When you press a stamp into clay, the clay receives the impression directly — text and designs read correctly in the final piece without any mirroring. This is the opposite of a rubber stamp, where the image must be flipped so it transfers correctly to paper.

How to Set Up a Clay Stamp in Stamp3D

The key difference from a standard rubber stamp setup:

1. Open Stamp3D and choose your shape — Round or Oval are traditional for pottery stamps; Rectangle works well for name/text stamps on clay tiles.
2. Type your text or upload a logo/design.
3. Turn off Mirror text. Clay stamps don't need mirroring — the design presses directly into the clay and reads correctly.
4. Increase the relief height. The default 2mm works, but 2.5–3mm gives cleaner impressions in clay, especially for fine text.
5. Check the preview — what you see in the impression tab is exactly what you'll get pressed into clay.
6. Click Download Stamp STL and slice at 0.1mm layers.

Best Shape and Size for Clay Stamps

Pottery stamp traditions favor round and oval shapes — they fit naturally on the base of a pot, the face of a pinch bowl, or the surface of a tile. But any shape works depending on your use case.

For a potter's mark (the signature pressed into the base of your work), 25–35mm round is the standard. Large enough to read, small enough to fit on most pieces. Text only — keep it simple. Your name, studio name, or a monogram.

FDM vs Resin for Clay Stamps

Clay stamps don't need to flex — unlike rubber stamps, you're pressing the clay to the stamp, not the other way around. This means PLA prints fine for clay stamps, which simplifies printing significantly.

FDM at 0.1mm layer height produces clean impressions for text above 5mm. For smaller text or detailed designs — botanical patterns, fine script, dense geometric repeats — resin gives dramatically better results. Standard (non-flexible) resin is fine since clay stamps don't require flex.

Print Settings for Clay Stamps

Print face-down on the bed in both FDM and resin. The build plate surface gives the stamp face its flattest, smoothest side — which means cleaner impressions. Do not support the face.

How to Use Your 3D Printed Clay Stamp

• Pottery and stoneware: Press into leather-hard clay (firm but not dry). Wet clay is too soft and sticks; bone-dry clay may crack. Dust the stamp face lightly with cornstarch to prevent sticking.
• Polymer clay: Press firmly into uncured clay. No cornstarch needed — polymer clay releases cleanly from both PLA and TPU. Chill the clay briefly in the freezer before stamping for a cleaner release.
• Air-dry clay: Use when the clay is still workable but slightly stiffened (30–60 min out of the package). Press straight down, don't rock the stamp.
• Bread dough / salt dough: Same principle — press straight down, lift straight up. A light dusting of flour prevents sticking.

Design Tips for Clay Stamps

• Keep strokes bold. Thin strokes (under 1.5mm on FDM) either don't print or don't survive the clay press. Use bold fonts — Oswald 700 (Bold Block in Stamp3D) is the most reliable.
• Avoid tight negative space. Enclosed areas in letters like O, D, and P can trap clay. Open letterforms (like Futura-style A without a crossbar) release more cleanly.
• Deeper is better. 2.5–3mm relief gives the clearest impressions. 2mm works for crisply printed stamps but is less forgiving on uneven clay surfaces.
• Round shapes release easier. Circular stamps have no corners to catch on clay. If your design has sharp 90° corners, they may drag or distort the impression on soft clay.
