Custom soap stamps for cold process soap typically cost $25–60 from specialty suppliers and take 1–2 weeks to ship. A 3D printed soap stamp costs a few cents in filament and can be designed, printed, and in use the same day. The maker soap community has largely moved to 3D printed stamps — the quality is there, and the ability to iterate designs quickly is a significant advantage for small-batch makers. The most important thing to know before you design: soap stamps don't need mirroring. You press the stamp face into the soap surface, so the design transfers directly — text reads correctly in the finished bar without any flipping. This is the opposite of a rubber stamp for paper.

The One Setting You Must Change

Stamp3D defaults to mirror-on, which is correct for rubber stamps on paper. For soap stamps, turn mirror off. If you forget, your brand name will be backwards on every bar.

The preview in Stamp3D's Ink Impression tab shows the design as it will appear on paper. For soap stamps, ignore that tab — look at the main 3D preview instead. What you see on the stamp face is exactly what you'll get pressed into soap.

How to Set Up a Soap Stamp in Stamp3D

1. Open Stamp3D and choose your shape. Oval and rectangle are most common for soap bars.
2. Type your brand name, a short tagline, or upload your logo as a PNG or SVG.
3. Turn off Mirror text — this is the critical step for soap stamps.
4. Set relief height to 2–3mm. Deeper relief shows clearly in both green and cured soap.
5. Preview the stamp face in the 3D view. This is what will press into your soap.
6. Click Download Stamp STL. You can also download the handle STL separately.

Best Size for Soap Stamps

The right size depends on your bar dimensions. The stamp should cover 60–80% of the bar face — large enough to look intentional, small enough to leave a clean border.

Measure your soap bar before designing. The stamp size in Stamp3D sets the outer dimensions of the stamp face. Leave at least 5mm of clearance from the bar edge to prevent the border from being cut off when the bar is trimmed.

When to Stamp Soap

Timing is everything for a clean impression:

• Cold process soap: Stamp 24–48 hours after unmolding, while the bar is still "green" (semi-firm). The soap should feel firm but still slightly soft — like refrigerated butter. Too soft and the impression spreads; too hard and it won't take a deep impression without cracking.
• Hot process soap: Stamp while still warm and slightly pliable, right after pouring into the mold. Hot process soap hardens quickly — you often have a shorter window than cold process.
• Melt-and-pour soap: Stamp after the bar has fully hardened (4+ hours), using a mallet or stamp press for even pressure. M&P bars are harder than CP soap; you need more force.
• Cured cold process soap: Use a soap stamp press or mallet. Place the stamp on the bar, cover with a folded towel, and press firmly with a mallet. Deep relief stamps and slow stamps (pressing firmly for 10–15 seconds) work better on hard cured bars.

FDM vs Resin for Soap Stamps

Like clay stamps, soap stamps don't need to flex — you're pressing into the soap, not flexing over a surface. PLA works and is the easiest material to print.

For an Etsy soap business where the stamp impression is part of your product presentation, print in resin. For personal or small-batch use where bold text is sufficient, PLA at 0.1mm is perfectly serviceable.

Print Settings for Soap Stamps

Getting a Clean Impression

• Dip in rubbing alcohol before stamping. A light wipe of isopropyl alcohol on the stamp face helps it release cleanly from fresh soap and reduces sticking.
• Press straight down, hold 10–15 seconds, lift straight up. Rocking or sliding will distort the impression.
• Use a stamp press or mallet for even pressure across the whole face — especially important for larger stamps and cured soap. Pressing by hand tends to apply more force to one side.
• Chill the stamp between uses. A cold stamp releases more cleanly from soap than a warm one.
• Clean between bars with a damp cloth to prevent soap residue from building up in the relief channels.
